Magnum, P.I.

Forty Years from Sand Island - S3-E17

Revealing mistake: Magnum usurped Higgins' desk while he's at the hospital. He is checking out of the article about Enoka running for Senate. If you look at the first article on the left, it begins with "The facts regarding the situation remain the same, state the authorities", the famous filler text that appears in dozens of props made by Earl Hayes Press. Plot hole: Marsha and Magnum have a wedding in great pomp and supposedly need to entrap an embezzler making believable their relationship...but who goes to work the day after their own wedding? A board is also mentioned, but apparently Magnum was appointed VP without any prior consultation.

I Do? - S3-E16

Revealing mistake: Rick at the "flawlessly vulgar" banquet drinks cheap champagne from a cup that falls on the floor revealing to be plastic. The floor is all wet already before the glass falls. (00:04:40)

I Do? - S3-E16

Character mistake: Bickering with his pretend wife after risking his neck with the falling crates, Magnums says "we can stop playing house, I can go back to being a private detective, which is exactly what I should have been in the first place." Magnum has a verbal tic during the series and he fiercely corrects everyone when they call him a private eye, or detective, as he goes only by "investigator" (the I in P.I, after all). He's using the wrong word here. (00:22:35)

I Do? - S3-E16

Continuity mistake: When Magnum encounters his secretary and he just won't let go of her hand, in the frontal views of Tom Selleck he has his fingertips curled, while in the reverse shots the fingers are straight and don't rise above the side of her hand. (00:19:00)

Other mistake: Marsha Mackenzie is supposed to be competent with certain aspects of men care; she comes from a wealthy family and she has been taking care of the men in her family all her life. And Magnum does show up at the Kamehameha club with a nicely done knot on his tie. When we actually see the actress tie that same not metaphorical knot though, it's very clumsy, crooked and differs in between shots (it's also done on an unbuttoned shirt).

Continuity mistake: Greta, Grandmother MacKenzie's cook, lets go of Marsha's arm when they are about to enter the residence, but she's back clinging to it in the next shot when Otto, Grandmother MacKenzie's butler gets in. (00:07:55)

I Do? - S3-E16

Continuity mistake: Harry MacKenzie gets two big splotches of cake on his suit. Dances with his niece, and then comes back to the buffet table taunting his nephew. No (or at least, very little) splotches at first, but in the closer view his suit is all soiled again. (00:06:20)

Continuity mistake: Rick and TC are at the wedding buffet. Behind them as they toast in memoriam of Magnum there is a dancing couple. She has a pink hat and her date has a yellow jacket. There's also a black guy in a brown jacket busting some groovy moves of dad dance. Both are also behind Higgins as he arrives, though. The couple also walks back and forth padding the background in the rest of the scene. (00:03:50)

Of Sound Mind - S3-E12

Higgins: How fiendishly deceptive of you, Magnum. I could have sworn I was hearing the emasculation of a large rodent. To my great surprise, I see the sounds are emanating from what I thought was a harmless musical instrument.
Magnum: Cute Higgins, real cute.
Higgins: Why Magnum? Why do this terrible thing?
Magnum: Higgins, I'll have you know I used to be very good. I was the second best sax player in my High School band!
Higgins: Well, how many sax players were there?!
Magnum: ...Anyway. I just saw this in a pawn shop window and thought I'd like to try and get my chops back.
Higgins: May I suggest that your "chops" are irretrievable.
Magnum: Higgins, did you come here just to abuse me!?

Trivia: At the awards ceremony, three men seated at a table together resemble three detectives from 1970s TV shows. Detective Mike Stone (played by Karl Malden) from ABC's Streets of San Francisco; Detective Frank Columbo (played by Peter Falk) from NBC's Columbo; and Detective Theo Kojak (played by Telly Savalas) from CBS's Kojak.
