Trivia: The events and description of the Planet Killer in this episode are referenced in The Next Generation novel "Vendetta." It was in the records Data was examining for a report for Picard. The first one was called a prototype, and the one Picard and crew face is the finished model. Larger, more powerful, and warp capable, this machine was driven by the vendetta of a person that wants revenge on the Borg.

Trivia: As the Enterprise encounters the field, Gary Mitchell is affected, and his eyes glow with an unknown, alien force. In the Star Trek The Next Generation novel "Q Squared", Q engages Trelane in a fight and is blasted backwards into the past, into a formless mass of energy. When the Enterprise encounters the energy at the edge of the galaxy, Q enters into Mitchel, giving him the power of Q.
