The One With Joey's Big Break - S5-E22

Question: When they are playing the game I dont even understand half the questions, maybe they are American-based, for example who are Simon and Garfunkel? Any explanations would help.

Answer: Simon and Garfunkel were singers Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon, and they were a folk/rock duo popular in the 1960s and early 1970s. They sang "Bridge over troubled water" and "Mrs. Robinson," but split up due to personal and creative differences. They had since rejoined with a recent tour together. A quick Google search would probably tell you more.

The One With Phoebe's Uterus - S4-E11

Question: When Phoebe is sitting on the couch with her mother, having just received the puppy, towards the end you can see a strange thing sitting on the couch behind/next to her. I can only view it on a small screen, but it looks like a phallic shape. It would make sense, considering that her mother makes erotic pottery, but is that what it is?

Answer: It is one of Phoebe's mother's sculptures. Whether or not this particular piece is erotic is debatable, but it can be defined as "non-objective" abstract art, meaning there's no recognizable shape or subject to it.

Question: What happened to the wooden beam in Monica's apartment? I remember it being there in the first few seasons and in one episode I'm sure Ross ran into it. Can anyone tell me what happened to it? Thanks.

emma2009

Chosen answer: The beam was removed after the first season but was put back in for episodes directed by James burrows as an inside joke amongst cast and crew.

Chosen answer: It was actually a Magna-Doodle and the sketches were sometimes done by the various cast members or more often by crew members Greg Bruza or Paul Swain. Other crew members would occasionally contribute over the years, as well.

The Last One (1) - S10-E19

Question: Does Rachel get paid quite a lot of money at her job (Ralph Lauren)? She shops at Chanel and Prada, and in the last episode she has a large Louis Vuitton shoulder bag, which I know is quite expensive.

Eclipse

Chosen answer: As an executive at Ralph Lauren, she would be making a good salary, and Louis Vuitton offered her a lucrative deal to work for them. Also, being in the fashion industry, she would likely receive discounts or even free samples of many designer goods.

raywest

Chosen answer: Nope. Joey is the only friend who has never gotten drunk.

The One Where Joey Moves Out - S2-E16

Question: When Jack and Judy are talking in the bathroom, Jack says something like "It's like a scene from 'Cocoon'." I haven't seen 'Cocoon', so can someone tell me what he's talking about?

Answer: In the movie Cocoon, some retired elderly people swim in a pool with some alien cocoons in them. The energy produced from these cocoons gives them a new lease of life, giving them more energy like when they were younger. Jack's reference to the movie in relation to Richard is that he is acting the same since he has started seeing his "twinky" (Monica).

Answer: The song is "Time of the Season" by The Zombies.

The One In Vegas, Part 2 - S5-E24

Question: When Joey is talking to his 'hand twin' in the bathroom he says "...And you know NASA's gonna want to talk to us." If he does in fact say NASA, then what does he mean? Why would they want 'hand twins'? Thanks.

Answer: It's just one of the nonsensical things Joey says, it's not as if NASA would really want hand twins. He just thinks they might because NASA researches a lot of stuff.

Answer: No, Phoebe and Monica have not kissed each other either. Ross and Monica kissed in college (we find out in series 10) - she was asleep on a bed and Ross thought it was Rachel covered by coats. Ross and Chandler may have kissed - in "The One Where Chandler Doesn't Remember Which Sister", it's implied he drunkenly kissed Monica, Rachel, and Ross, but Ross may just be joking.

Jon Sandys

Actually phoebe and Monica did for a brief moment in the London episodes. At the beginning the leave the apartment and for some reason all the girls kiss on the lips.

The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate - S1-E1

Question: In the very first episode, there is a scene in which Ross is in his apartment, talking to Joey and Chandler about his failed marriage to Carol, and is worried that there is only 'one woman' for everyone. Joey encourages him to 'grab a spoon' - to which Ross replies: 'Do you know how long it's been since I grabbed a spoon? Do the words 'Billy don't be a hero mean anything to you'? Well the words 'Billy don't be hero' mean very little to me, so I'd be grateful if somebody could fill me in on this. Thanks.

JoeyJoeJoe

Chosen answer: It's a song released in 1974, earlier than he met Carol (1988) but he's probably exaggerating for comic effect - it's been that long since he grabbed a spoon. It also means that he is unadventurous and too scared to 'grab a spoon' and take the opprtunity. The song was about a kid in the war who wanted to be the hero and get up and fight.

Ral0618

Chosen answer: If you watch the episode on the dvd, at the end it will come up explaining how the scene was cut due to September 11th. After that quick message the scene plays automatically.

Ssiscool

Answer: He just used the name as a joke, since she was very excited and "knowledgeable" about bribing the waiter. Somewhat of a throw-back to the old mob days in New York.

Ral0618

It is a reference to Grace O'Malley, an Irish pirate. Here's the story: https://www.libraryireland.com/HealyEssays/Grania4.php.

Answer: I think it's because he was so disturbed to find out his Dad was having an affair. People do strange things when they get bad news... eat lots of ice cream, retail therapy etc. For Joey, being of Italian descent, his reaction was to make lots of pasta sauce.

Dr Muppet

He does it when he has to sleep with someone for a part?

Chosen answer: Jenifer Aniston injured her wrist outside of filming and had to wear it for a little while.

Ssiscool

Answer: While filming The Whole Nine Yards with Matthew Perry, the two actors made a bet in which if Willis lost, he would have to appear on FRIENDS for free. Willis did lose, but the studio still paid him. To keep the terms of the bet, Willis donated the money to a charity.

The One With Phoebe's Ex-Partner - S3-E14

Question: When I first watched this, the way Joey talked and everyone reacted, I thought he had accidentally thrown Ginger's real leg into the fire, and she got an artificial one later. If Ginger had her fake leg then, why did everyone react the way they did?

JohnShel91

Chosen answer: How in the name of heaven would he have "thrown" her real leg into the fire, short of wrenching it off her body? Joey's not a psychopath. They reacted the way they did because he threw her artificial leg, thinking it was a log, into the fire, then ran away, leaving a one-legged woman stranded in a cabin with no means of transportation. A cowardly response, and he clearly feels awful about it after the fact, but that doesn't negate it being a terrible thing to do in the first place - less so the action itself, which was a stupid mistake, but him running away afterwards.

Answer: Exactly as she said - in the 50s it was near-universal for husbands to work and be the sole breadwinner/handle finances, while their wives stayed home and managed the house, including cooking.

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: After extensive research on the internet, I couldn't find any stories to explain this. It would not be unreasonable to say that Marlo Thomas had not appeared on the show for 6 years - last time we saw her she was 59, and in this episode she is 65. She is an ordinary woman who works hard, and simply looks older.

He's My Brother

Answer: Lennie is a character in the novel "Of Mice and Men." He is large and strong, but also mentally challenged. He loves holding small animals, but has a tendency to kill them accidentally.

The One With Ross's Teeth - S6-E8

Monica: What happened to your teeth?
Ross: I whitened them.
Chandler: Really?
Ross: Yeah, what... What do you think?
Monica: Well, uh, I think I shouldn't look directly at them.
Ross: Come on, seriously.
Monica: Ross, they're really, really, really white!
Chandler: Yeah, what was wrong with your old... Human teeth?
Ross: Well, I did leave the gel on a little longer than it said to.
Monica: How much longer?
Ross: Uh, uh... A day.
Monica: Ross, you know that tonight is your date with Hillary?
Ross: I know! That's why I did it! Come on, are they really that bad?
Chandler: No. No, no, no, you'll be fine. Hilary's blind, right?
Monica: She will be after tonight.

Trivia: The Magna-doodle on the door in the boys apartment has a different picture on it every episode. There is usually some tenuous connection between the picture and the plot of the episode.
