Peter, played by Robert Downey Jr., is a serious and stressed-out architect that just wants to get back to his pretty wife to be there for his wife's giving birth to their first child. Unfortunately, he crosses paths with the ultimate, obnoxious and dim pest named Ethan who's traveling with his small dog Sonny and a can full of his father's ashes, played by Zach Galifianakis in a role that could have easily been associated with John Leguizamo or Gilbert Gottfried. Things go steadily wrong for poor Peter during a long cross-country trip as his temper mounts and Ethan negatively influences every encounter he has, with airport security, a paraplegic war veteran, Mexican border police and others in this slapstick dark comedy that tries to capitalize on Robert's dry delivery and Zach's oblivious and off-putting actor-wannabe character. This odd couple stuck together plot grows thin pretty quickly, and even fans might chafe after awhile of watching this uncomfortable road trip gone wrong.
Ethan Tremblay: My father always had a saying "When a day starts like this it's all uphill from here.
Peter Highman: Uphill? No, it's all downhill from here.
Ethan Tremblay: But nobody wants to be down, everybody wants to be up. It's all uphill from here.
Peter Highman: But it's easier to go downhill. So your dad had no idea what the fuck he was talking about.
Trivia: When a road worker jumps out of the way when Peter and Ethan drive the Subaru off the bridge, he yells a Wilhelm scream.
