Three of the five crew members leave Mars and on the way back to Earth they realize that there's not enough fuel to return. Floyd (Lloyd Bridges) and Lisa reflect about their lives before the ship crashes. Floyd contacts Earth and tells what happened during the mission. Dr. Fleming receives reports that the ship crashed in Nova Scotia. He disagrees with his colleagues and doesn't consider the mission a failure because the crew of the X-M made it to Mars, so now it's possible to travel to other planets. Fleming orders that the construction of a second X-M ship start as soon as possible...

Dr. Lisa Van Horn: I suppose you think that women should only cook and sew and bear children.
Floyd: Isn't that enough?
