Obadiah (Jeff Bridges) takes Tony's (Robert Downey Jr.) second version of the artificial heart used to power the suit (and that's used to keep himself alive) and uses it to power another suit that was recently built at Stark Industries. Tony battles Obadiah in his suit using the first version of the artificial heart. Tony asks Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) to overload Stark Industries' arc reactor and Obadiah's suit malfunctions and falls into the reactor. The next day, at a press conference, instead of covering up the truth by saying that someone in an armored suit is his "bodyguard" (nicknamed by the press "Iron Man"), Tony reveals that he is Iron Man. A few minutes into the end credits, Tony arrives home and notices that someone's sneaked inside his home. He asks the mysterious person who he is and it's Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (the organization that wanted to talk with Tony Stark, throughout the movie, about how he escaped captivity in the mountains and the ones who helped cover up the arc reactor explosion). Fury says to Tony that now that he's revealed to the world that he's Iron Man.. he's stepped into another world he didn't know existed. Fury tells Tony that he wants to talk with him about a project called The Avengers Initiative...

Continuity mistake: When Pepper is watching the television program about Stark Industries' stock troubles, after Tony's press conference, notice she has a wireless headset in her left ear. When Tony calls her down to the lab, the camera flashes back to Pepper and the ear piece is gone. (00:48:50)

Trivia: Notice they don't play the lyrics with the "Iron Man" song in the closing credits. That's because the Black Sabbath song was not about the comic book Iron Man. There are many theories about what the song means, but the most popular is that it is about a man who travels to the future and sees the apocalypse. They couldn't use the lyrics to describe the Iron Man in the movie: He was turned to steel - In the great magnetic field - Where he traveled time - For the future of mankind. Now the time is here - For Iron Man to spread fear - Vengeance from the grave - Kills the people he once saved.
Question: After Obadiah Stane steals Stark's new reactor, how does the old one he reinstalled run out of power? It's a reactor: it generates power.
Answer: Yes it does create electric energy, but because of the laws of physics, energy can't just be created, it must be converted from another type of energy (chemical in this case, I assume), so Tony added a ring of palladium to the reactor while building it, which causes a chemical reaction inside to generate electric energy, so anyways, if the chemical energy inside the reactor is taken way so is the ability of the reactor to produce electric energy. Tony solves this in pt. 2 with switchable cores.

Chosen answer: It was basically a prototype made from, to quote Stane, "a box of scraps." It was not strong enough to last, especially when it came to powering Tony's high tech armor armor upgrades.
