Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as Joel and Clementine, two opposites (He a lonely introvert and she fearless and quirky) who quickly fall from one another, unaware that they were previously involved until one sought out a memory erasure! This sometimes sweet romantic comedy with a tale about the value of cherished memories intertwines with a cautionary second plot about the dangers of using a mind-altering device and allowing unknown agencies to meddle with memories. Elijah Wood gives a creepy turn as an identity-stealing technician named Patrick, Kirsten Dunst as a secretary named Mary who's involved with the company behind the memory erasing, and Mark Ruffalo as another technician, Stan, who has been involved with Mary and he, along with Patrick, are responsible for Joel and Clementine's continued dilemmas. Sometimes confusing and trying to juggle being a romantic comedy with science fiction and psychological thriller elements, ESotSM works best as a film showing just how hard it is to remain committed to a complex relationship. Kate and Jim make it fun to watch.

Continuity mistake: When Howard's wife is leaving Joel's apartment, the first two shots show her trench coat belt hanging from the bottom of the driver's door. In the third shot the belt is no longer hanging from the door. (01:19:30)

Clementine: You're not a stalker, or anything, right?
Joel: I'm not a stalker. YOU'RE the one that talked to me, remember?
Clementine: That is the oldest trick in the stalker book.
Joel: Really? There's a stalker book? Great, I gotta read that one.

Trivia: The scene where Joel stumbles upon the memory of his visit with the doctor, even though there are two Joels, there are no special effects being applied. As the shot turned back and forth, Jim Carrey actually dashed behind the camera, switching from a standing up wearing a jacket and stocking cap, to sitting down wearing no jacket no hat. It's actually quite impressive.

Question: Why is there so much blue symbolism in Kate Winslet's house. I know her hair is blue, but are we to believe she changes the colour of everything in her house when she changes her hair colour (which is often, apparently)?

Chosen answer: Psychologists believe blue is a 'peaceful' color, as opposed to agressive colors like red. Experiments seem to show that people are genuinely effected emotionally by use of colors. Blue would promote a clear, calm - dare I say spotless - mind. Note this is also used in Forrest Gump; almost everything Gump wears is blue, suggesting again his calm, uncluttered thoughts.
