The Missing is a gritty, classic type of grim western that has a woman and her youngest daughter meet and team up with her estranged father as they seek out her other, older daughter who was taken during a raid by renegade American Indians to be sold into slavery across the southern border. Tommy Lee Jones stars as Samuel, who had abandoned his daughter and her mother, and Cate Blanchette plays Maggie, desperate to find her beloved Lilly, his older granddaughter, before she is raped and/or killed. Ron Howard's rescue story has heroism, redemption and forgiveness as relationships are tested and sacrifices made during their quest to save Lilly and others from a terrible fate.

Continuity mistake: This is actually in a deleted scene on the DVD: Jones shoots a mountain lion at night, and it's seen to be completely dark out. The two other men go out to look at it, but when they're walking across the snow, the sky is suddenly pale blue and there's light just below the horizon. It looks like it's just before dawn or just after sunset. But when they reach the dead mountain lion, the sky is suddenly black again, and it looks like it's the middle of the night.

Samuel Jones: If I stay here very long, I might misbehave. Somebody might have to kill me.
