Intolerable Cruelty

Marilyn (Catherine Zeta Jones) and Howard Doyle's (Billy Bob Thornton) marriage is phony, and Doyle is actually a soap opera actor hired by Marilyn to pose as a wealthy oil man. After her 'divorce, ' from Doyle, penniless Marilyn pretends she's rich and cons Miles (George Clooney) into marriage and tears up the Massey Prenup to prove her love. After the wedding, she leaves Miles and files for divorce, scheming to take all his money. When Miles discovers her deception, he hires a hit man to kill her.

Meanwhile, Rex Rexroth has a heart attack and dies without having changed his will, leaving Marilyn everything. Miles is now entitled to Marilyn's money in the divorce settlement. Upon learning this, Miles has a change of heart and tries to call off the hit, only to find that Marilyn has offered the hit man a better offer to kill *him* instead, and then the hit man accidentally shoots and kills himself. Marilyn and Miles reconcile during their divorce hearing. They sign another Massey prenup, but rip it up to prove they truly love and trust one another. Presumably they live happily ever after. Marilyn makes Donovan (Geoffrey Rush) (the producer who recommended the actor) a partner and he comes up with a new TV show: "America's Funniest Divorce Videos" and Gus (Cedric the Entertainer) is the host of the show.

Continuity mistake: During the Gutman trial, Massey has a binder of documents on his table. In the wide shots, this binder is very close to his pad of paper; in the close ups it is not. (00:12:10)

Trivia: Before marrying "Doyle", Marilyn says she wants to erase every suspicion from his mind, a reference to the Elvis song "Suspicious Minds" that is used during the title sequence.
