Factual error: With the radiation belt on fire, the icecaps begin to melt. The Seaview is bombarded by huge chucks of ice. The ice is sinking to the bottom like stones. Ice floats, it doesn't sink.

Hillery receives radiation in her reactor sabotage, & confronting the Capt, falls into the shark tank. Ansara holds the control room hostage with a hand-grenade, while Sterling, in scuba-gear, moves along the exterior top of the sub, while underway. He opens a missle hatch & attaches a launch mechanism. The missle fires, breaches the surface, heading skyward. The flaming belt explodes, ending its threat to earth. Ansara is captured, Pigeon orders the Seaview surfaced, and they pick up Sterling as the flaming sky belt burns out. Pigeon, Sterling, Lorre, & Avalon congratulate each other, & the sub heads home on the surface, with a clear blue sky overhead.

Answer: Admiral Nelson is puffing on cigars in a few scenes, and his cigars are even a source of dialogue in the film. Specifically, when his quarters catch on fire, the blaze is initially blamed on a lit cigar, to which Nelson angrily replies that he ran out of cigars before the fire ever occurred. So it's a pretty good bet that Nelson was carrying a cigar (or cigars) in his shirt pocket.
