White Oleander

Astrid tries to make a deal with her mom.. that if she (mom) tells the truth why she killed her boyfriend, then Astrid will lie for her in court. Astrid's mom talks about how when Astrid was very young, she left her for about a year at some woman's house and that Astrid's dad is an artist and he came back asking for Astrid when she was 8 years old. At the trial, Astrid isn't asked to testify and Astrid's mom goes to prison, meaning that she now lets Astrid live her life. Astrid moves to New York with Paul Trout and two years later, in a magazine, she reads an interview about her mom.

Trivia: The prison scenes were all shot the same day, for security reasons. (It is almost unheard-of for an occupied, running prison to allow filming.) This shows the real talent of Allison Lohman, the only character to be in every scene of the movie, by showing her ability to age from 13 to 18 in the five hours the filming was allowed.
