Starship Troopers

Trivia: The view that people acquired citizenship and the right to vote through military service reflected the views of "Starship Troopers" author Robert Heinlein. His views were influenced by his years in military service during World War II, and what he saw as the supposed "laziness" of civilians.

Trivia: In Heinlein's novel, the Mobile Infantry - true to its designation - used suits of powered armor, which have no appearance in the movie. However, this idea inspired the concept of personal high-tech armor in SF, such as Marvel Comics' Iron Man.

Trivia: In the scene where the infantry first descend on Klandathu, the shot of all the small ships flying down amongst blue bolts of plasma is almost identical to the opening sequence of Quake 2.

Trivia: The moon base was named Tereshkova in honor of Valentina Tereshkova, the first female astronaut in space.

Trivia: This movie has very little in common with the original Robert Heinlein story. Starship Troopers in the book are highly trained soldiers in technically advanced and highly destructive battlesuits - like Iron Man on steroids. And Johnny is not the football hero - he was second place in a track event. The character in the book is an everyman, not a star.

Trivia: The actors told director Paul Verhoeven that they would only do the shower scene if he shot the film while naked. Verhoeven agreed.

Trivia: If you look closely at the Rodger Young, the model makers have put in an easter egg and used the Millennium Falcon as part of the detail.

Trivia: Screenwriter Edward Neumeier has a cameo as a man convicted of murder and sentenced to immediate execution during one media break.

Trivia: The ship driven by Carmen is named Rodger Young, in tribute to the soldier Rodger Wilton Young, who died as a hero in World War 2.

Continuity mistake: Toward the end, Carmen Ibanez gets stabbed through the shoulder when she is brought before the big master alien thing. If you were to sustain such an injury, there would be so much swelling, not to mention just destroyed tissue, that you wouldn't be able to move that arm for weeks. Yet a few minutes later, she is seen hefting around a very large assault rifle, and seems to have no difficulty. I guess it's a pretty standard action movie "heroes can temporarily ignore injury in order to save the day" kind of oversight, but it just seems exaggerated in this case, considering how severe the shoulder trauma looked. More quotes from Starship Troopers

Question: Is there any reason the humans can't simply use nukes, chemical weapons, fuel-air bombs, or bioweapons,, any kind of especially powerful, destructive bomb, shot from long distance, dropped from a plane, or better still, orbit, to fight the bugs? Yes, of course there are big downsides to any such action, but this does not strike me as a society restrained, patient, enlightened or with sufficient foresight to care about those.

Chosen answer: They do use nukes (to clear out bug caves) and fuel-air bombs (like they do before landing troops). It's possible biological and chemical weapons don't work on the bugs because of their physiology. Only nukes and Thermobaric weapons work.

lionhead

Answer: Nukes, chemical, and bio weapons would render the planets uninhabitable. Not a goal when they want to colonize.

I have already stated these people are not that far-thinking.
