Continuity mistake: Hallie takes the remote control off the top of the TV to turn it on. But later when they return in front of the TV to watch the news report, the remote is back on the top of the set. Also, the position of the video console which is also on top of the TV has changed, the position of the clothing on the chair next to the television has repositioned and lastly, the items on the window sill behind the TV set have completely changed. Continuity mistake: When Sidney grabs the caller ID device, the position of her fingers on it change between shots. (00:12:30)
Continuity mistake: When Sidney leaves her dorm room to head for the shower and Hallie follows, you can see the open wardrobe by the dorm door, and there is a jumper visible hanging from the wardrobe door. But when they walk back into the room to look at the news on TV, the jumper has moved and now there is a bag visible in front of it as well. (00:13:05 - 00:13:50)
Continuity mistake: In her room at the start, Sid's hair is a little bit over her eye. She talks to her roomate and walks out of the room. The next shot her hair is perfectly behind her ear, but she didn't have time to put it back. (00:13:05)
Continuity mistake: Sidney tells her friend Hal that she doesn't think she's going to be able to make it to the martini mixer party. Hal goes "Whaaaaaaa?" as she is folding a cute pink thingie, which rests in her lap. In the background in the next shot we see the pink fluffy towel is now further down on her knees. (00:13:55)
Continuity mistake: In her opening shot, CICI says that you can't blame violence on entertainment. Behind her, out of focus, there's a student with a beige shirt. You can see his left hand, but in the next shot he has his right arm crossed on top of it. The rest of the scene goes on with that extra's motions not matching at the cuts (he's touching his chin next time, then he isn't). (00:15:20)
Continuity mistake: When the Artsy Teacher (that's how he's credited) asks if the student thinks the killer is trying to make a real life sequel, he's sitting straight. He is then suddenly hunched over in the next shot. (00:16:00)
Character mistake: During the scene in which they are all arguing whether or not film sequels are better than the original or not, someone says Sigourney Weaver's classic line from the movie Aliens: "Get away from her you bitch", and Randy makes a smart comeback and tries to correct him by saying "I think the correct line was 'stay away from her you bitch'. This is a film class, right?" Wrong - the first guy was right. This line is truly unconvincing for the Randy character, being a big movie buff and all. Jamie Kennedy decided to improvise as Joshua Jackson actually made the initial mistake by saying the wrong line, causing a different mistake. (00:16:25)
Continuity mistake: When Mickey mentions Godfather Part II, there are reaction shots on the other students who have to agree on that statement, but their positions are inconsistent between shots (for instance the girl with the blue shirt has both hands joined at first, then at distance, the girls on the background to her right are leaning towards each other at first, then not, etc). Audio problem: Randy is leaving class to meet Sidney, but his classmate first asks him "So, Mr. Originality..." The camera cuts away before she finishes the sentence, but you can tell that the word that came after "So" doesn't match what the actress is saying. (00:17:20)
Continuity mistake: Debbie Salt introduces herself to Gale Weathers and asks her a question that Gale does not like, so much that she puts her hand on Joel's camera and points it away, downwards. At the cut though Joel's camera is back up. (00:20:00)
Continuity mistake: When Gale tells Debbie off giving her a nasty 'quote', the sun shines on Laurie Metcalf's sleeve in the angle where she says "Great!" and does not in the ones before and after. She is left standing in dismay, and you can see her in background with the sun casting another entirely different shadow even if she didn't move. (00:20:05)
Continuity mistake: Gale is spearheading the other reporters' walk towards the press conference after she just humiliated Debbie. One of her colleagues asks her what's she doing there and if she thinks the murders are connected. To the right you can see a young redheaded photographer in both the shots when the question takes place, but in the first she's walking slowly and fixing the camera, in the second she cuts in resolutely and perfectly prepared. Revealing mistake: Towards the beginning, when Gale Weathers is talking to the sheriff who is standing at a podium, you see Mickey filming her with a hand-held camera. A panning shot going right following Mickey with some friends walking sideways reveals him looking at the camera twice. This is because he was waiting for his cue to stop. (00:20:50)
Continuity mistake: Randy brings Sidney's attention towards Gale at the press conference. When Randy says "Starring Gale Weathers", Jerry O'Connell is gripping the shoulder of his backpack, and he isn't in the shots before and after. (00:21:00)
Continuity mistake: The sorority girls that invite Sidney at the party when she is watching the press conference leave turning around in unison. The taller black girl in the background though handwaves in the first shot but in the second, when she is in front, her arm is all the way down. (00:22:00)
Continuity mistake: Mickey says in no uncertain terms what does he think of the sorority girls from Delta Lambda. There's a reaction shot to Hallie's "Hey!" that features just Timothy Olyphant and Jerry O'Connell, and Olyphant pulled the sleeves of his oversized T-shirt up quite a bit because it is 200% baggier at his shoulders. Continuity mistake: Sidney says all of a sudden "Oh my God" because, as we then learn, she spotted Dewey. Jerry O'Connell's backpack switches shoulder from right to left. (00:22:15)
Continuity mistake: Sidney and Dewey begin their chat. In the wide shot, you can see that a girl is passing by the gazebo, behind it. She does it again in the next closer angle on the two talking, starting from way back. (00:22:50)
Continuity mistake: When Sidney and Dewey are talking under the gazebo, before Dewey walks off, Sidney is leaning against one of the support beams of the gazebo. In the next shot she is standing at the centre of the staircase, away from the beam. (00:23:00)
