Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Amidala and the others arrive on Naboo only to find the capital city of Theed taken over by the Trade Federation. With Jar Jar’s help, Amadala forms an alliance with the Gungans, and they prepare for war against the Federation droid army. Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Amadala slip into the palace through a back entrance. Inside the palace hangar, Qui-Gon hides Anakin in a space ship cockpit, telling him to stay put.Darth Maul awaits the two Jedi. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan peel off to confront him while Amadala and her squad infiltrate the inner palace. Both Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan battle Maul, a formidable and powerful adversary wielding a double-bladed light saber. Obi-Wan becomes separated from the other two by a containment shield. Before he can reach them, Maul mortally wounds Qui-Gon. Barely able to contain his rage, Obi-Wan ferociously attacks Maul, but Maul fends him off and knocks him into a deep shaft and kicks his light saber over the edge. Clinging to a short wall protrusion, Obi-Wan calms his mind with the Force. He hurls himself upwards while levitating Qui-Gon’s light saber, catches it mid-air, and somersaults over Maul. Unprepared for this unexpected maneuver, Maul is sliced in half, his severed body falling into the shaft. Barely alive, Qui-Gon makes Obi-Wan promise he will train Anakin as a Jedi. Obi-Wan gives his word as Qui-Gon dies. Amidala and her squad penetrate the throne room and attack the viceroy and his troops, but they’re surrounded by enemy droids. As they surrender, the Queen’s bodyguards swarm in to rescue them and capture the viceroy. Meanwhile, the Gungans bravely fight the massive droid army but are being overwhelmed. Still hiding in the cockpit, Anakin accidentally takes off in the space ship and lands inside the enemy command ship orbiting above Naboo. Firing a torpedo at a reactor, it creates a chain-reaction explosion. Anakin escapes before the ship is destroyed. As it explodes, the computer-controlled droid army is deactivated; the battle is over, and the Trade Federation has lost.Naboo celebrates the great victory and heralds a new era of friendship and cooperation between Gungans and the people of Naboo. Senator Palpatine has been elected Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, promising to bring peace and prosperity to the galaxy. Obi-Wan is promoted from padawan to Jedi Knight. Keeping his promise to Qui-Gon, he demands the council make Anakin his padawan (apprentice). The council reluctantly agrees. Now believing that the Sith have returned, Yoda and Mace Windu ponder the identity of Darth Maul and whether he was the master or the apprentice.

Trivia: Senator Grebleips, who appears when the Queen of Naboo speaks to the senate, is an alien from "E.T." making a cameo appearance. This is after Steven Spielberg ('Grebleips' is 'Spielberg' backwards) included some "Star Wars" references in "E.T."

Question: Something I never quite figured out when watching the film was what the shields in the corridor were for? The shields that separate Darth Maul from Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan during the fight. There are dozens of them and all they seem to do is benefit the fight in the film without having any real purpose.

Lummie

Chosen answer: According to "Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I" by Kristin Lund, they are "laser doors which lock into position in response to potentially lethal power outputs that occur intermittently during plasma activation process" (the fight takes place in a plasma energy processing plant). There are six laser doors in deference to an ancient Naboo legend in which Chaos is held back by six inpentrable gates. As you say though, they're really just a plot device to add dramatic tension to the duel!
