Lina (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon activate the exit sequence and leave the city in one of the small boats. They reach the surface during the night and some time later the sun rises. Lina and Doon write a message saying that it's time to leave the city and go to the surface. They tie the message to a rock and drop it straight down to the city.
