Chris and Tim are half brothers, Dil is really his father. This is because John stole Dil's girlfriend from him who became his wife, which is why Dil is provoked into committing fratricide. The coins are lost in the river and Chris winds up fatally stabbing his own father in the ensuring struggle with the same knife that Dil used to murder John. Chris comes round in a hospital, where he is reunited with his brother and they go off to live with their mother's parents
