This Island Earth ending / spoiler
The planet Metaluna begins collapsing and Exeter, Cal and Ruth escape and make their way back to Earth. On the way back, a Metalunan that was stowaway on the ship attacks and wounds Exeter. When they arrive on Earth, Cal and Ruth leave Exeter's ship on a biplane. Exeter dies of his wound and the ship, low on fuel, crashes into the ocean.
