Continuity mistake: In the black toe scene when Bob and Charlotte are having lunch and Bob tells her about his massage, Charlotte rests her cheek on her fist, then the camera cuts back to Bob and Charlotte has her chopsticks in her hands, then back to Charlotte and her fist is up to her cheek again. An aging married actor played by Bill Murray who has cast aside his acting integrity in exchange for popular stardom is in Japan for a whiskey commercial. There, he meets a younger woman who is equally lonely as a result of her husband being a professional photographer out on assignments constantly. The two meet, flirt- have an ambiguous relationship for several days but never kiss. "Bob" and "Charlotte" have much in common- both are lonely and looking to find themselves despite being married.

Charlotte: Why do they switch the r's and the l's here?
Bob: Uh... for yuks. You know? Just to mix it up.
Bob: They have to amuse themselves, 'cause we're not making them laugh.
Trivia: Charlie Brown is an actual friend of Sofia Coppola. His real name is Fumihiro Hayashi and he owns a fashion magazine in Tokyo.
Question: Do Charlotte and Bob end up sleeping together? While the obvious answer is no, when they are going up the elevator the night before Bob is leaving, notice the jacket he is wearing. It's the same jacket that Charlotte gives to him the next morning which he says she "stole" from him. While it doesn't necessarily say they did, they obviously did something together after the elevator scene.
