Malèna ending / spoiler

In 1943, the war ends in Italy and U.S. troops enter the town of Castelcuto, hailed as heroes. Malèna is beaten up by some of the women in town and has her hair cut off. She leaves town and some time later, her husband returns, still alive and looking for her. Everyone in town starts whispering and gossiping, saying that he's better off not knowing that his wife slept with other men. Renato gives a letter to Malèna's husband saying that he shouldn't believe what the townspeople say about Malèna and that she was faithful to him while he was absent; Renato also mentions in the letter that she left town by train. One year later, Malèna and her husband are reunited and return to Castelcuto. One day, in the market, some of the townspeople are surprised to see Malèna and as a way of "accepting" her back in town, they greet her and offer her clothes and food. On her way back home, she drops some oranges and Renato helps her pick them up; he greets her and says good luck. Renato, narrating the story, mentions that he's older now and he has loved many women. Some of them have asked "will you remember me?" and he always says yes. The only woman he's never forgotten is the one who never asked him that question: Malèna
