What's Eating Gilbert Grape ending / spoiler
Gilbert's mother, who is morbildly obese, makes a change in her life by actually leaving the couch, in this act she dies. She never wanted to be a joke, and if they were to remove her from the house it would have had to been by a crane, so the chidren decided to spare their mother that embarassment and burned the decrepit house down. Amy and Ellen moved to a different town with more opportunities, and Arnie and Gilbert went to tour the US with Becky and her grandmother.
