Basic ending / spoiler
Osborne (Connie Nielsen) shoots Styles just as he's about to kill Tom (Travolta) because Styles is in charge of the whole drug smuggling operation and Tom found out. West (Samuel L. Jackson) and the other soldiers who were thought to be killed in that training exercise are not dead. Travolta, Pike (Taye Diggs), Samuel Jackson, Castro, Nuñez and Dunbar are Section 8. The training exercise, the "murder", the interrogation, everything is all part of Section 8's secret operation to find out who was behind the drug smuggling. Osborne figures it out at the end.
