While You Were Sleeping plot summary
Lucy Eleanor Moderatz works for the Chicago Transit Authority in the ticket booth for the el. Her mother died when she was little and her father passed away a couple of years ago.
There's a man who comes to her booth at about 8:30 every day and in her opinion, he's perfect and one day, she dreams of marrying him. The only problem is that she doesn't know his name and has never spoken to him. This is about to change though.
It's almost Christmas and because she has no family, she has to work on Christmas Day. Mr Charming (aka Peter Callaghan) comes to the station and promptly gets pushed onto the tracks by a couple of kids and is knocked unconscious. Lucy runs out to rescue him, jumping onto the tracks and pulling him out of the way of an oncoming express train.
At the hospital, she's not allowed to see him and when she quietly sighs that she was going to marry him, she is overheard by a nurse who takes her up to the Intensive Treatment Unit.
When Peter's family arrives, Lucy is mistakenly introduced as his fiancée. Lucy is unable to get a word in edgewise and so cannot correct this mistake.
She goes to visit the still unconscious Peter in the hospital and his godfather (Saul) overhears her and realises that she's a complete stranger to Peter.
The next day, Lucy is invited to share Christmas with Peter's family, an invitation which she eventually accepts.
What no-one knows though, is that Peter is already engaged to a married woman by the name of Ashley Bartlett-Bacon.
While staying at their house, she meets Peter's elder brother Jack and falls in love with him. Saul tells Lucy he knows she was never engaged to Peter and advises her to go along with it for the time being. Peter regains consciousness and as he doesn't recognise Lucy everyone assumes he has amnesia.
Jack falls in love with Lucy, but as he thinks she is engaged to Peter he doesn't tell her.
Peter asks Lucy to marry him. The wedding day arrives and before the priest has even reached the end of his first sentence, Lucy objects. She finally tells everyone the truth. Ashley storms in and objects, closely followed by her husband who objects to her objection.
Peter's family is scandalised by the fact that he proposed to a married woman and in the ensuing argument, Lucy manages to escape unnoticed.
She decides to quit her job at the CTA and leave Chicago but on her last day, Jack (accompanied by his parents, grandmother, kid sister and Saul) turns up and proposes and they get married.
