Professional psychologist Dr. Leo Marvin (Dreyfuss) is getting ready to go on a family vacation at his summer home, and getting ready for a live interview with Good Morning America. A few hours before he leaves, a seemingly traumatized colleague leaves a new patient on his doorstep. The patient is Bob Wiley (Murray), a lovable, walking encyclopedia of fears, and problems. Shortly after Bob meets Leo, Bob follows him to his vacation spot. In the process of driving Leo to insanity, Bob charms Leo's wife and kids, steals the spotlight on Leo's interview, blows up Leo's house, and marries Leo's sister, Lily.

Dr. Leo Marvin: No, you won't. You're just saying you will! But then, after I don't kill you, you'll show up again. And you'll do something else to make everyone in my life think you are wonderful and I'm a schmuck. But I'm not a schmuck, Bob, and I'm not going to let you breeze into town and take my family away from me, just because you're crazy enough to be fun.
Trivia: Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfus did not like each other in real life, and were actually hostile to each other on several occasions during the shooting. This real-life hostility may have actually fed the on-screen chemistry of their characters.
